Prospective students and their families can schedule a tour with our Dean of Students, Terrence Thigpen. You’ll be able to ask questions and get an in-person, in-depth look of scholar life at LJA. Sometimes we can even schedule a shadow day where a student can spend the day with a current LJA scholar and experience life at LJA firsthand. We’ve found it’s helpful for families to tour LJA prior to signing their student up for shadowing, but is not required. This experience is intended for prospective students who are considering attending LJA and would like to learn more about our school.

The fine print
We receive applications all year long, but applications for the upcoming school year will be officially accepted starting January 1 each year. We will continue to accept applications until the lottery date, which is the first Friday in March by 4 p.m. If the number of applications exceeds the capacity for a grade level, all the applications received before the lottery date will be entered into the lottery for open spots for the school year, this lottery will occur within two weeks of the application deadline. Applications received after the deadline are accepted on a rolling basis, and put on a waiting list if necessary.
Enrollment is a 2-step process. Once we have your information, we’ll confirm your scholar has been accepted or let you know where you are on the waitlist. In order to secure your spot, the enrollment paperwork must be completed. Your scholar is not enrolled until the completed paperwork is returned.

LJA is a tuition-free middle school located in the Mac-Groveland neighborhood of St. Paul, MN. Our school does not require admission tests. Admissions is open to all students from the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. We do not discriminate or deny admission based on intellectual ability, measures of achievement or aptitude, athletic ability, disability, race, creed, national origin, religion, gender, LGBTQ+, or any other grounds that would be unlawful.
