"Upon starting employment at LJA, I was immediately struck by the professionalism and collaboration evident in all of my interactions with colleagues. Never before did I see a group of people working together with such ease and apparent trust to meet their shared goals. As a teacher who was about to begin a year of co-teaching, I had questions, concerns and even a few fears. Those fears were immediately eradicated, not only through my interactions with my co-teacher, but by the community of educators who have created an environment in which collaboration is authentic and where the voices of the many are not only heard, but valued, respected, and used to improve the school community. As a natural skeptic, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it hasn't and I do not foresee it doing so as the spirit of collaboration and shared problem solving seems to permeate each and every interaction, staff meeting, communication, etc. Collaboration requires much from its participants - trust, open communication, vulnerability, risk taking and the ability to change one's thinking and practice. As a "seasoned" teacher, this can be a huge adjustment when coming from a school/district where these characteristics were not truly valued. I have been supported each step of the way at LJA and can feel my hesitation and anxiety continue to shed.
