Imagine a new way of learning at Laura Jeffrey Academy, where we believe that YOU matter. We’re changing the world, one classroom at a time, and developing well-rounded scholars with big hearts, bright futures and the ability to think critically. We focus on STEM classes that stimulate an interest in learning and pursuing careers in the STEM fields. Your future is loading.

THE LJA WAY

At LJA, students learn to think, dream, and do, which leads to empowered scholars and alums who continually find solutions, push beyond stereotypes and dismantle glass ceilings. LJA graduates are articulate, thoughtful, conscientious citizens, and eager participants in their own learning and growth.

With our STEM-focused learning, we incorporate strong science content, technology, and critical thinking throughout all content areas. We help our students nurture their curiosity and wonderment, become innovative thinkers and resilient problem solvers, and apply STEM thinking in and out of the classroom.

Our middle school experience fosters academic, social and emotional development in our scholars.

6TH GRADE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

At the 6th-grade level, students are empowered with increased agency in their learning, providing them with opportunities to explore a wide range of projects and discover their own interests. Dedicated mission-driven educators lend support to scholars, prioritizing the academic and social-emotional well-being of each learner.

Furthermore, the 6th-grade curriculum encourages students to assume a higher level of responsibility for their own education. This prepares them for the challenges they will encounter in high school and beyond, fostering a sense of self-reliance and determination.

Through various programs, such as advisory sessions, students not only strengthen their sense of belonging within the school community but also develop a deeper understanding of their role in the broader society. At LJA, creating a safe and inclusive environment is a core value, where students can openly discuss relevant topics that are important to young adolescents.

Overall, LJA strives to provide a holistic educational experience for 6th-grade students, empowering them to become lifelong learners who are capable of confidently navigating their academic, social, and emotional journeys.

GRADE 6 CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS

  • 6th Grade Advisory: In 6th grade, our advisory program continues to support scholars, centering on the development of our students' voices and self-identity. We understand the importance of nurturing individuality and self-expression alongside academic growth.

  • Mathematics: In mathematics, 6th graders continue to build on their strong foundational skills. They explore concepts such as ratios, representing algebraic relationships through tables, graphs, and equations, and applying percentages, fractions, and decimals to solve real-world problems. These skills serve as the building blocks for their mathematical journey. We infuse mathematics with fun and real-world applications to help students apply their learning in exciting ways.

  • Language Arts and Social Studies (LASS): LASS scholars in 6th grade engage in combined grade-level classes with our 5th graders, creating a unique learning environment. This setting not only provides 5th graders with the opportunity to learn from their older peers but also allows 6th graders to practice their leadership skills and become role models for the younger grade. LASS scholars delve into rich historical topics while continuing to refine their reading, writing, and discussion skills.

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics): Just like in 5th grade, 6th graders join forces with their peers for our stimulating STEM class. In this interdisciplinary setting, scholars continue to explore the world through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. Beyond academic proficiency, the focus remains on fostering competency and confidence—this is a vital time in academia when many students begin to doubt their abilities in STEM education, so we center our programming on building a welcoming environment for learning where all students know they are valued and capable.
