From Montessori to Middle School: Continuing the Journey You Started

If you chose Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, or another intentional early learning approach, you already know — education is more than worksheets and test scores. It’s about cultivating curiosity, independence, and a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. You’ve seen your child thrive in an environment where they can move freely, learn through hands-on exploration, and follow their interests. You’ve watched them grow in a setting that values the whole child: mind, heart, and spirit.

But then comes the middle school question. Too often, families feel like the next step is automatic: the local district school, whether or not it matches your child’s learning style or values. Families who carefully chose Montessori or Waldorf for preschool and elementary sometimes feel like they have no real choice when their child turns 10 or 11. That’s where Laura Jeffrey Academy, with its unique and innovative approach, offers something different.

At LJA, middle school starts in 5th grade — a deliberate decision to make the transition gradual, not abrupt. We believe the upper-elementary years are an essential time in education. Scholars are ready for more independence and new challenges, but they still need the warmth, trust, and individual attention you’ve valued in your child’s early years. By starting middle school earlier, we preserve that close-knit, multi-age community feel while expanding academic opportunities and leadership roles.

Our classrooms are alive with the same principles that might have drawn you to alternative education in the first place: scholar-led projects, cross-curricular learning, real-world applications, and a deep respect for every learner’s unique pace and passions. Much like Montessori’s emphasis on prepared environments or Waldorf’s integration of arts and academics, LJA designs learning spaces where students can think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and take ownership of their education.

And because middle school is more than academics, we place a high value on social-emotional growth. Our advisory model ensures every scholar has a trusted adult who knows them well. Leadership opportunities start early, giving scholars the chance to guide peers, mentor younger learners, and contribute to the school community. Our 5th graders benefit from having great role models, and those older scholars take pride in welcoming them and helping them learn the routines, building a culture of respect and connection across grades.

You’ve made thoughtful, values-driven choices for your child’s early education. You don’t have to compromise now. At Laura Jeffrey Academy, your child can continue to learn in an environment that honors their curiosity, supports their independence, and prepares them for a future they can shape with confidence.

Middle school is a new chapter—but it doesn’t have to be a departure from the journey you started. At LJA, we ensure a seamless continuation of your child’s educational journey, providing a secure and confident transition.
