A Unique public charter school

Laura Jeffrey Academy, also known as LJA, is a tuition-free public middle school in St. Paul, MN. The Mac-Groveland neighborhood is ranked number one in the state as one of the best places to live. Our inclusive learning environment is open to all students in grades 5-8 and scholars are encouraged to explore their potential, discover their brilliance and develop their intellect. They thrive through cooperative learning, STEM-focused courses and hands-on projects. We are an LGBTQ-friendly middle school and support cultural diversity and inclusion in all aspects of school life. LJA also offers a range of extracurricular activities, including sports teams, running teams, and after-school care program supports.

At LJA, our interdisciplinary teaching model provides scholars with the experiences and skills that result in both academic and personal success. We celebrate our scholars’ voices and allow them choices on how they best demonstrate what they know and what they’ve learned. And, unlike other schools, LJA includes an educator-led model of leadership instead of having one principal or director. Our school is overseen by an extraordinary leadership team of teachers and staff members who guide our scholars to become critical thinkers and leaders.

Our scholars graduate from LJA and are fully prepared for success in high school – and beyond.

WHO was laura jeffrey?

Laura Jeffrey (1915 – 2003) was a long-time Minnesota resident and local librarian whose life exemplified the love of learning and service to community.

At a time when there were few career choices available to women and African-Americans, Ms. Jeffrey became an honors graduate of Macalester College and one of the first African-American librarians in the St. Paul library system, later becoming head librarian. An inspirational woman, she built a life that exemplified personal strength, intelligence and a passion for her beliefs. Our middle school is named in her honor and, today, provides a stimulating learning environment that fosters confident young scholars. They will ultimately follow in Mrs. Jeffrey’s footsteps and become a positive force in their communities.
