Year-Round Calendar and Intersessions
LJA is a year-round school on an approximately 45/15 day calendar year – the same number of days as a traditional school, but arranged differently. Students attend school for approximately 45 days and then have a 15 day break. The 15-day break includes vacation days as well as optional intersession opportunities and a longer vacation in December, with the month of July off. Year-round schools are becoming increasingly popular for several reasons. Year-round schools:
- Eliminate the significant learning loss that occurs during the summer.
- Allow more time for new learning, as teachers do not have to spend time re-teaching concepts each Fall.
- Increase opportunities for unique, experiential immersion activities.
Intersessions are optional enrichment programs during the Fall, Winter, and Spring breaks. Intersessions complement the school's curriculum and allow students to immerse themselves in disciplines and activities of interest. Teachers, artists, community experts, support staff, and educational assistants lead intersessions.
